Film Opening Research #1 - Star Trek Wrath of Khan

Star Trek II Wrath of Khan

Movie Opening Scene Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6iNk9pF9t4

How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film?

- There is two title screens of Paramount Pictures (Including the Paramount Pictures Presents)

- Another title screen that shows "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" in faded lettering

What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?

- Space is the main theme with a slow creep in of the scene

- This slowly starts growing the theme of what the movie is mostly going to be shot of

What connotations do the images carry?

- The images have a sense of depth yet at the same time the effect of emptiness. I feel like because of the space theme images it represents what space truly is. It is a place that we truly don't know and that we have really yet to discover it.

-Space is a harder image to try and figure out, however, the main connotations I see in this movie opening would be the effect of the unknown but also at the same time a sense of mystery of where this movie is going to end up.

How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset?

- The technical codes and symbolic codes represent a feelings of mystery. The camera angles of technical coding peers into a slow moving abyss of faint light and darkness slowly engulfing it.

- Possibly the darkness could be representative of what could of happened in previous films that left our main characters looking into the deep void of space, or it could show the way that this movies is going to start off with our main characters being in this situation in the future of this movie.

How does the film establish an enigma from the outset?

- It shows short clips of filming that are representative of the darkness in space, but does not tell the true story of what could be happening off screen. At the same time the film uses fast paced music that could show a sign of what is to come. Maybe showing the violence and or risk that certain characters are taking to complete their mission, or it could just make way for a build up of tension with both the film and the viewers.

What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

- The film has a wide use of fast paced music and mysterious shots that would end up scaring off any potential non-target audience viewer because they do not understand the true nature of what is happening around the scene of the main plot. This target audience would most likely be that of younger generations that could handle fast paced action and adventure; but at the same time it targets regular returning viewers with the classic music that is in every Star Trek movie.

How has technology been used effectively? You might want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques?

- Camera angles are in use all the way through this main scene of this movie. With the camera slowly going towards the center of the screen showing a wide angle shot of the emptiness of space. Transition wise there is transitions between names of directors and people that have worked on the show, however, these are brief but do leave a long lasting impression. This is mostly due to the quick jump cuts between names and characters that can include a dose of action packed start up film making.
